A scheme for a homeless charity initiative – regenerating an otherwise forgotten site below the St Georges Island railway arches in Manchester. Our proposal includes 40 new dwellings, a village hall community hub and a number of outdoor amenity spaces, sheltered below the listed arches.
The design uses low cost materials in a creative and playful way to provide something truly unique and uplifting, whilst building upon the sustainable principles of modular design.
Every home affords a waterside aspect and includes a bedroom, sitting space and bathroom. Each home is arranged in a 2 storey cluster of 8 units, surrounding a central courtyard. Each cluster is connected via ‘a street’ between the arches and linked to the village hall – which acts as a community hub space where residents have access to skills and training activities such as preparing food harvested from the community allotment.
