Accrington Town Centre masterplan for Hyndburn Borough Council & Lancashire County Council. The masterplan involves the wholesale regeneration of the town centre, focused around the following key design principles;
Create Viaduct Park – By remodelling the existing A679 roundabout, a new public park is proposed. The existing Grade II listed Viaduct will be reintegrated into the town centre, celebrating the towns industrial heritage. This new public park will be a space for play, leisure & enjoy the Viaduct set within nature.
Connecting Communities – Town centre permeability will be improved through de-engineering the existing Eastgate dual carriageway & creating a linear park. The reduced carriageway will make space for safer pedestrian crossings, a joined up cycle route & planting – improving connectivity for existing residents.
Repopulate the Town Centre – Like many town centres, there is an over supply of vacant retail space. A true mixed-use community is proposed on the site of the existing shopping centre. New homes, a potential hotel and flexible workspace will increase footfall within the heart of the town centre.
Celebrate the Heritage – An existing vacant office building will be demolished to create a new public space next to the Grade II* Listed Town Hall & Grade II Listed Market Hall. This flexible space can be used for performance, outdoor markets, play & alfresco dining, with an impressive backdrop of two magnificent heritage buildings.
